Making of the site v1 2026

CONTEXT

Ok, first off, some context: I deleted all social media applications in 2025 on my phone because I realised I keep swapping apps and doomscrolling. It negatively impacted my sleep and routine because I lost time scrolling. February 2026, I watched a YouTube VIDEO that mentioned Neocities as a website host. I had experiences messing with html and css through Tumblr (I was on Tumblr since 2015-2022 on and off) and I prefered customising my site more than the social media aspect. A little fun story: when I was 16, I was granted the opportunity for a STEM workshop with an IT company; I was in the beginner's group for coding and the 'teacher' said I should have been in the intermediate group... I was too embarrassed then to say I knew html and css language through Tumblr. I have NO formal education or watch any videos or courses on coding, I am completely self-taught by inspecting and looking at source codes of cool websites.

DESIGN AND INSPIRATIONS

I drew a quick sketch of what I want my site to be: A LOT of dragable elements. However, due to my limited capabilities, I was going to make it static with my pixel art elements. My design was my 'logo',which is an exaggerated cartoon depiction of me, and two draggable hands. While digitising the logo as pixel art, I realised inside my mouth is can be a navigation bar (my sister it look like Hangyodon). I really liked 22YK01 and NIPIWAKI use of ascii art for their websites, so I used the “inspection” tool and viewed their source codes to see how they were able to format the ascii art.

I used the image to ASCII TOOL to spit out my ascii base to be altered in Notepad. This was very time consuming!! I know of Monodraw and really want to try it but it's only for Mac and I don't own a Mac LOL. If I have two words to describe making the Ascii for my site, it would be: shaping & moulding.

I didn't really consider Ascii as part of my site until I saw RIBOSE'S NEIGHBOURHOOD and talented Ascii artists ADELFAURE and FUNGI. They got me inspired to create a page with Ascii instead of pixel art or stock icons!

I wanted my sidebar to be the same as you look through the pages. So my solution was iframes. TEPPYSLAYOUT's iframe themes was a great help when figuring out how to swap between iframes, as well as STACK OVERFLOW and W3 SCHOOLS (the good ol' trusty). The biggest downside of iframes is the slow update (it need time to load and sometimes it forgets/ take hella time).

OVERALL

This have been a fun experience. I think I learnt a really cool skill and bragging rights "yeah I can kind of code... eh!". This version is a big accomplishment for my return of site making almost from scratch outside of Tumblr. I am even contemplating redoing my site all over again, because I am confident I can remake a responsive site.
