Needle-felting 101
last edit: 7th April 2026
This fiber-art hobby is not suitable for children because it involves NEEDLES. You WILL poke yourself with the needle and hit hurts A L O T. The needle have holes in them and they are especially THIN AND SHARP, especially made to "felt" or bind wool fibers together. It is relaxing as something repetive and it makes nice crisp sounds while you poke. However, I will admit the cost of wool is not cheap or accessible.
Materials
If you have a Daiso near you, that is how I got into the craft around 2015 (yikes almost 10 years). Daiso sells both the wool and the needles, they are great as starter packs for cheap. The needles does break over time and use so I can not stress enough the importance of safety!!
You will defo need a mat or something to felt on top. I use a free horsehair brush provided from buying a leather shoe. I used sponges before and I didn't like the cleanup process. I found the wool get stuck in the sponge. Also, DO NOT felt without a mat. It will RUIN your table (R.I.P my table)
For wool, you can get second-hand natural fiber. Check the composition, it must be 100% natural or it will not felt/ bind to each other. Any wool like yarn, scarfs and sweaters can be reused to needle-felt. Acrylic or polyester is plastic and they will not bind or felt (trust me I've tried)

You need 3 things: the needles (VERY SPECIFIC NEEDLE-FELTING NEEDLES), wool (MUST BE NATURAL WOOL) and mat (something to protect your beloved surfaces or if you are BRAVE, your legs)
Get to work
A big positive thing about needle-felting, it's like sculpting wool. Just keep poking until your desired shapes and youre done!!
